Day 18: STANDING ON OTHERS’ SHOULDERS
share

When Paul needed to speak in the manner that the legalistic Jewish people understood, he was quick to remind them of his track record, including learning “at the feet” of the famous Gamaliel. Apostle wasn’t self-made, he grew through the ranks. Upon his conversion, the very learned Paul happily synced up with the “less-educated” Barnabas in a mentor-mentee relationship that evolved to an effective team of co-ministers. That platform would later benefit Mark and Timothy, besides many churches and regions. The body of Christ need such teachable mindset today, more than the days of Paul required.
Usually, rising on the wings of veterans can only be to your advantage. Interestingly, most elders like to go over and beyond for such youngsters who are patient to learn and be led. Many years ago, one of our fathers in the Lord guided me through a process and throughout the supposedly difficult transaction; daddy's name was enough to keep issues within my control. From the moment I mentioned his name to the vendor, the elderly man was no longer selling the property to me, he was selling to daddy G.O, and had to check everything to ensure that we had no problems.
Few months ago, a 25 year old friend of mine was explaining reasons why he needed to attain some levels of independence by moving out of his uncle’s place. Brave, isn’t he? I took time to explain how upon leaving nursing school I opted to live under the watchful eyes and informal mentorship of great families, until a few weeks to my wedding. Where did we end up as tenants? Under the watchful eyes and guidance of a boss and prayer leader! I shared some of the great lessons that colleges don’t teach but that those places offered me; and how I have, as a point of duty remained answerable (- under God) to our mentors in all decisions.
Cris was brought to limelight by Alex in a father - son relationship that is so rare. Cris rose through the ranks and Alex had to allow him to fly, as soon as the eagle was matured enough to soar. Cris would go on to win impossible individual and team honours, becoming a global brand in the process. But as great as Cris may have become, a phone call from Sir Alex in August 2021 was still as instructional as when Cris arrived in England from Lisbon 2 decades ago. At the twilight of his glorious career, his countless laurels haven't crashed his willingness to be taught and guided by the "old school" Alex, and playing under his former mate (Ole SG) notwithstanding. People envy the successes of these superstars and celebrities but very few know the sacrifices, relationships and investments that their lives thrive on.
Gamaliel could not have effectively impacted an arrogant or restless Paul. Paul didn't come to the less-educated Barnabas with his legal accolades and academic gowns. He came humble - accounting himself to be the last in the Apostolic line and the least important of the Apostles. Much later, when he was writing to the Philippians, he remembered to insert that he hadn't attained just yet, but still striving. The humility didn't stop at his humble beginnings, and that may be one of the secrets upon which God built the trans-generational impacts of Paul.
Few years ago, my wife and I had an experience that was not pleasant. We knew what to do and (by God’s grace) we had the capacity to do them. But everything ended in the office of our mentor - no further questions asked. To some elite friends, I was unwise, but that’s okay. We owe our lives to God and the amazing people He is using to raise us. Look at Paul's approach regarding Onesimus. The Bible doesn't record ‘boss’ Philemon disregarding that "plea bargain" from Paul. Mentoring isn’t just for starters, it is more imperative as God lifts you up. One of my favourite prayers is that I will be more teachable all through life’s journey. By reasons more than the law of gravity, you will find out that staying up is tougher than getting up. After God, the shoulders of veterans in your life are great assets; platforms.
